The 1 CFM per ton rule of thumb
HVAC training guides and field references often recommend about 1 CFM of pump displacement per ton of system capacity for typical residential and light commercial evacuation. Example: a 2-ton mini-split needs roughly 2 CFM — the 3.5 CFM class covers that with headroom. A 4-ton central system needs roughly 4 CFM — the 5 CFM class is the next rung. This is a shopping screen, not a substitute for manufacturer deep-vacuum procedures or micron targets.

Hose, leaks, and real pull-down time
Vacuum hose inner diameter, length, valve core tools, and system leaks often dominate how long evacuation takes — sometimes more than moving from 5 CFM to 7 CFM on paper. Use a micron gauge, isolate the system, and fix leaks before blaming the pump label.
